Candidates to vie for Haverford seat
By:
HAVERFORD - The township's Republican and Democratic parties have endorsed candidates to vie for the 4th Ward commissioner seat in November.
Former 4th Ward Commissioner Fred Moran was forced to resign in March after he was sentenced to six months probation on a bribery conviction. Democrat Jan Marie Rushforth has been serving as interim commissioner.
Township Republicans have endorsed Denis Gray to challenge Democrat Dan Siegel in November's special election, which will determine who will serve out the remainder of Moran's term.
Gray, an attorney, has served as school board president since 1999. If elected, Gray would have to give up his school board post.
Democratic Party Chairman Robert Stump said township Democrats have backed Siegel in his bid for Moran's seat. Siegel mounted unsuccessful campaigns against Moran in 1997 and District Justice Bob Burke in 1999.
